Question Banks · iTest & AI Questions

Question bank management software for universities and examination bodies

A question bank stops being manageable somewhere around the ten-thousandth item. Faculty write into scattered spreadsheets, the same question turns up in three courses with three different answers, nobody can say which items were actually reviewed, and every new paper is assembled by scrolling. The bank still exists — it simply cannot be searched or trusted.

Question bank management software fixes that by treating each question as a governed record rather than a row of text. Intrazero builds question banking into iTest, its examination platform, and AI Questions, its generation and marking engine — so items are tagged, reviewed, approved, analysed after delivery and reused across terms, with the same bank feeding online exams, printed papers and OMR bubble sheets.

Tagging by subject, difficulty and Bloom level

A question bank is worth no more than the metadata attached to it. Every item should carry the subject and topic it belongs to, its cognitive level on Bloom's taxonomy, its intended difficulty, the learning outcome or curriculum code it measures, and the language it was written in. Without that, retrieval is guesswork and blueprinting an exam is impossible.

With structured tags in place, assembling a paper becomes a query rather than a search: forty items from cardiology, sixty per cent at application level or above, nothing used in the last two sittings. The bank answers; the coordinator reviews.

  • Subject, course and topic hierarchy on every item
  • Bloom's taxonomy level recorded per question
  • Intended difficulty held separately from observed difficulty
  • Mapping to learning outcomes and curriculum codes
  • Author, cohort and usage history stored with the item

Author, reviewer, approver — with an audit trail

Most institutions already have a review policy written down. What they lack is a system that enforces it. iTest routes each item through the roles your regulations require — the academic who authors it, the peer or committee that reviews it, the head of department or examinations board that approves it — and records who did what, and when.

An item reaches a live exam only once it carries approved status, so a question drafted the night before cannot slip into a paper. Rejected and revised items keep their full history, which matters when an appeal arrives months later and someone has to show exactly how a question was cleared.

  • Role-based author, reviewer and approver permissions
  • Draft, under review, approved and retired states per item
  • Reviewer comments and revision history retained
  • Only approved items eligible for exam assembly
  • Audit trail for appeals, accreditation and quality reviews

Item analysis that shows which questions are working

The exam ends and the data begins. Item analysis turns candidate responses into a verdict on each question: how many answered correctly, whether the item separated stronger candidates from weaker ones, and whether any distractor was doing no work at all.

Feeding those results back into the bank is what stops it decaying. Items that misbehave are flagged for revision or retirement instead of being asked again next term, and the difficulty tag stops being the author's estimate and becomes an observed value.

  • Difficulty and discrimination indices per item
  • Distractor analysis on multiple-choice options
  • Flagging of weak items for revision or retirement
  • Observed difficulty written back to the item record
  • Reporting by subject, cohort and exam sitting

AI generation from your own source material

Writing items is the bottleneck. AI Questions generates draft questions from material you supply — lecture notes, textbook chapters, clinical guidelines — across 15 question types and 18 languages, so an academic starts from a candidate item to edit rather than a blank page.

Generated items are drafts, not published questions: they enter the same author–reviewer–approver workflow as anything written by hand. The platform has generated over 10,000 questions since March 2026, and is in use at Ajman University. It also marks what it produces — objective items automatically, alongside essay marking and OMR bubble sheets.

  • Draft items generated from your own uploaded material
  • 15 question types across 18 languages, including Arabic
  • Generated items enter the same review and approval workflow
  • Moodle plugin for institutions already teaching in Moodle
  • Automatic marking of objective items, essays and OMR sheets

One bank, reused across terms and delivery modes

A question written once should serve for years. Usage history per item lets coordinators exclude anything used in a recent sitting, rotate items between cohorts, and hold high-value questions in reserve — which is precisely what makes a bank an institutional asset rather than a file.

The same bank feeds delivery. iTest handles 120,000+ concurrent candidates and more than 2 million exams a year, runs Egypt's national medical licensing examination (EMLE), sat by 9,397 doctors, and integrates with Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas and Google Classroom. It deploys in the cloud, on-premise or hybrid, and is built against GDPR and FERPA.

  • Usage history per item to prevent unintended repeats
  • Item rotation and reserve pools across cohorts and sittings
  • One bank for online exams, printed papers and OMR sheets
  • Integrations with Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas and Google Classroom
  • Cloud, on-premise or hybrid deployment; GDPR and FERPA

FAQ

What is question bank management software?

Question bank management software stores every exam item as a structured, governed record rather than a line in a document — tagged by subject, Bloom level and difficulty, moved through review and approval, analysed after each sitting, and reused across terms. Intrazero delivers this through iTest, its examination platform, with AI Questions for generation and marking.

How do you manage tens of thousands of questions without losing control of them?

Through metadata and state. Each item carries subject, topic, Bloom level, intended difficulty, learning outcome and language, plus its author and usage history, so it can be retrieved by query instead of by scrolling. Approval status controls what may enter an exam, and usage history shows where a question has already appeared.

Can items be tagged by Bloom's taxonomy level and difficulty?

Yes. Bloom level and intended difficulty are recorded per item, and observed difficulty from item analysis is written back after delivery — so blueprinting an exam by cognitive level and difficulty mix is a query against the bank rather than a manual exercise.

Who approves a question before it can appear in an exam?

Whoever your regulations say. iTest supports role-based author, reviewer and approver permissions, with draft, under review, approved and retired states. Only approved items are eligible for exam assembly, and reviewer comments plus revision history are retained for appeals and accreditation.

Can AI generate questions from our own material, and can we trust them?

AI Questions generates draft items from material you upload, across 15 question types and 18 languages, and has produced over 10,000 questions since March 2026. It is in use at Ajman University. Generated items are drafts: they pass through the same review and approval workflow as questions written by hand before any of them reach a candidate.

Can the question bank run on our own servers, and does it connect to our LMS?

Yes. iTest supports cloud, on-premise or hybrid deployment, so the bank can sit inside infrastructure you control where data-residency rules require it, and it is built against GDPR and FERPA. It integrates with Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas and Google Classroom, and AI Questions ships a Moodle plugin. Raise your hosting and integration constraints during discovery so they are written into scope.
